COBOURG, ON. — On March 6, 2020, the Town of Cobourg and the Northumberland Central Chamber of Commerce held their 19th annual Business Achievement Awards Gala. Leading companies in a variety of different industries such as hospitality, health & wellness and manufacturing, gathered to network and celebrate the occasion.

National Shunt Service, Ltd. was honored with the 2019 Mayor’s Award for its continued commitment and contributions to the business community of Cobourg, Northumberland, and beyond. Cobourg Mayor John Henderson presented NSSL Vice President, Chad Stewart with the award and made the following remarks:

“The business that has impressed me the most is this year’s recipient of the Mayor’s Award. At the heart of [NSSL’s] business is their mission to be dependable, trustworthy, and flexible while providing a cost-effective integrated system, and they have not veered from it.

Their ability to optimize supply chains for a diverse range of industries has made them into a national company. Their hands-on approach is consistently applied to everything they touch—whether they are volunteering with minor sport teams, supporting youth in the community or while they are facilitating strategic moves for Fortune 500 retailers. They strive for continuous environmental performance across their value chain, from their suppliers through to their customers by providing innovative, pragmatic solution-based systems.”

We are grateful to Mayor Henderson, the Town of Cobourg, and the Northumberland Central Chamber of Commerce for recognizing NSSL with this prestigious award. We also want to thank every member of our team for their continued passion and dedication—without them, nothing we do would be possible! Learn more about NSSL.

Key Safety Initiatives

Throughout Safety Month, we are launching several initiatives to enhance our safety culture, focusing on the following critical safety concepts
1

Look Around From All Sides

Reversing incidents are a significant safety concern in our industry. To combat this, we emphasize the importance of driver’s always having ample clearance on all six sides—up, down, left, right, front, and rear. Patience is key, and it’s crucial never to rush the backing process. Our drivers ensure mirrors are clean and properly positioned to minimize blind spots. We remind our drivers that they’re 100% responsible for safely backing their vehicles, and to trust their own assessment over relying entirely on technology or other aids.

2

Yard Safety & Collision Awareness

Yard safety is paramount, and collision awareness plays a crucial role in preventing incidents. Always reduce speed and come to a full stop when necessary. Paying close attention to your surroundings is essential as hazards can appear suddenly. Since 90% of incidents are due to inattention, maintaining high levels of awareness can prevent these accidents.

3

Slow Down! Be Prepared to Stop

Speed and inattention are leading causes of yard accidents. Whether driving a truck or walking, always be aware of your surroundings! Our NSSL drivers maintain a safe distance from other vehicles, especially when another truck is backing up. Whether in a Yard or on a city street, never exceed the posted speed limit as it significantly increases the risk of accidents.

4

Fatigue & Wellness

Driver fatigue is a critical issue that can impair both mental and physical performance. Our Fatigue Management Plan emphasizes the importance of prioritizing sleep and physical activity. Using breaks for stretching or light exercise can also help. Limiting caffeine intake and staying hydrated are crucial; consider adding electrolytes to your water for sustained energy. If you’re feeling drowsy, adjust your environment by opening a window or repositioning your seat to help stay alert.

5

Awareness in Maneuvering & Surroundings

Awareness during maneuvering is essential for safety. If in doubt, always get out and look. Utilize mirrors effectively and frequently check blind spots. Adjust your speed according to yard conditions and ensure trailer doors are closed securely before moving.

6

Distracted Driving

Distracted driving increases your risk of getting into a collision or accident. Avoid texting while driving, as it takes your eyes, hands, and mind off the job of driving. Practicing defensive driving is crucial: stay alert and look ahead, scan the road and mirrors, avoid vehicle blind spots, and maintain a safe driving distance. Remember, anything that takes your eyes away from driving is a distraction and can be dangerous.  Tips for Staying Safe Here are some essential safety tips our team practices out in the yard:

  • Stay Alert: Always be aware of your surroundings and potential hazards. Distracted work can lead to accidents.
  • Use PPE: Personal protective equipment is your first line of defense. Ensure you are wearing the appropriate gear for your tasks.
  • Report Hazards If you notice a safety hazard, report it immediately. Prompt action can prevent accidents.
  • Follow Protocols: Adhere to established safety protocols and procedures. These guidelines are in place to protect you and your colleagues.
